Historical Melaka International Chess Championship Final Results

Grandmaster Attila Czebe convincingly won the first Historical Melaka International. Going into the final round he had a 1.5 point margin over his closest challenger meaning that even a loss could not prevent him from lifting the champion's trophy.

He easily drew the final game against Indian GM Deepan Chakkravarthy.  As it turned out there were a massive number of draws on the top boards. GM Laxman against  IM Karthikeyan, GM Bitoon Richard against GM Romero Holmes Alfonso and GM Arun Prasad against  GM Fominyh Alexander were all drawn.

Young Yeoh Li Tian turned in a polished performance against SEA Games bronze winner, Indonesian FM Rudin Hamdani. This leaves the lad in a tie for second position with the previous mentioned GM and IM. An even greater success than the previous Brunei Campomanes Open. Unfortunately he missed an IM norm by 0.5 point. So this is the second time Li Tian has missed a norm but the future is bright for this boy.

The second best Malaysian is IM Mas who easily defeated Ismail Ahmad. The latter gave a piece for a non-existent attack. Other best Malaysians are Zaidan Zuklipli and Nayan Ahmad Fadzil who all scored five points.

In the Challengers section, Malaysian Fong Choong Ee defeated the leader to reach 6/9 and a share of the 3rd-5th prize.

Hope he made an IM norm !

If the opponent was rated 2450 then the 6 point would be enough. He missed the norm by 0.5 point.

A good sign of better things to come. What is important now is to maintain the momentum, prepare for the Malaysian Open well to score a GM norm :-)

I dont know if this works but I recall that there is a provision that allows a player to discard a win against a lower rated player in order to raise the rating ceiling. If that was done, would it not suffice?

Amazing.. Tying for second place! This little man IS strong.. Playing at roughly 2300-2400 level at 13 years old! I'm beginning to think that he's more talented than Mas or Nicholas.. Wat a waste he didn't make the IM norm..

Minimum number of rounds for IM norm is 9. So the possiblity of dropping won games do not arise.

Li Tian and Chin Seng, Congrats!

FGM or SPM? Parents will have difficult choice. Join the main-stream or set a Malaysian first? There is not much time to make decision.

What do Malaysian chess players think, ... maybe start a poll. We have never had such a talent before and with time on his side too.

Li Tian,
If you continue progressing like this, you will be a GM before you are 16! Congratulations and all the best!

Can you send me your FIDE ID to forward to the Arbiter for further clarifications?

if you go to http://ratings.fide.com/tournament_list.phtml?moder=ev_code&country=MAS&rating_period=2012-07-01

it is clear that only the Open category is FIDE rated; Challengers are not. why is it so ? a good question to ask the organiser; Mind you there are some players from abroad playing in the Challengers too ( hoping to get their games rated ? )
