Torre qualifies for Philippines team

Asia's first grandmaster , Eugene Torre, has qualified for the Philippines team to the Istanbul Olympiad later this month. Thus, Torre will equal the record of Hungary's Lajos Portisch with twenty olympiad outings.

The 60 year Torre proves that age is not a factor in chess by competing alongside such younger players as Oliver Barbosa and Mark Paragua. Readers will remember Barbosa as one of the grandmasters defeated by our even younger Yeoh Li Tian.

The full team consists of Torre, Barbosa, Mark Paragua, Oliver Dimakiling and Wesley So.  Of the five, the only non-grandmaster is Dimakiling. The board order is So, Barbosa, Torre, Paragua and Dimakiling.

The Philippines will hope to better its 50th position at the last olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk.
