Four rounds of DATMO

After four rounds completed and talking to a few Malaysian competitors, I can give the following results. Sumant had a major scalp in Round two beating GM John Paul Gomez of the Philippines. He has already secured RM100 since there is a prize for each grandmaster that you beat.

Yeoh Li Tian beat Indonesian WGM Irene Sukandar to bring his points to 3.5, but not sure if the prize extends to woman grandmasters!

Nicholas Chan, Yeoh Li Tian    3.5 pts
Jimmy Liew, Mok Tze Meng, Sumant , Liew Ken Yew 3 pts

Probably there are more Malaysians with three points but these are the ones that I know of.

In the fourth round, Nicholas drew GM Gasanov in a tense time scramble. My game had just finished and I just could not get near their board as there was a big crowd. From the sounds I could hear, there was a major time scramble. At the end, the grandmaster lost on time but Nicholas did not have mating material.

I had an interesting round four against Faizal Andin who is always a tricky player for me. Nevertheless I reached the following winning position.

Jimmy Liew - Faizal Andin

Black has just played 24...Bf4.

Now I found 25. d6! but incorrectly followed up after 25...Qxd6 26. Be5

I had intended 26. Rd3 Nh7 27. Bxg7+ Kxg7 28. Qg4+ Qg6 29. Rd7+ Rf7 30. Rxf7+ Kxf7 31. Qxc8 but overlooked that after 31...Bxc1 white has 32. Ne5+ forking king and queen.

26....Qa3 27. Bxf4! Qxc1+ 28. Re1 Qc3

After 28....Qa3 29. Qh3+ Kg8 30. Qe6+ Kh8 31. Bd6 forks the queen and rook.

29. Be5 Qa5 30. Qh3+ Kg8 31. Qe6+!

The win is less clear with 31. Bxf6 Rce8! (32. Be5?? Rxf3 and black wins).

31...Kh8 32. Bxf6 Rxf6

32....Rce8 33. Ng5+ Kh8 34. Qxe8 Rxe8 35. Rxe8 mate.

33. Qh3+ Kg6

33....Kg8 34. Qxc8+

34. Ne5+ Kg5 35. Qg4+ Kh6 36. Qh4 mate
