Currently the World Youth Championships are on-going in Slovenia. There are various age categories and Malaysia is represented in all except the Girls U-18.
Peter Long is the Head of Delegation and coach to Roshan who is competing in the Open U-16. He has an interesting report at his blog here. Six rounds have been completed. Yesterday was a free day so the seventh round continues today.
So far the best Malaysian performer is Goh Jie Yi in the U-8 Girls. Jie Yi has five points, just half point behind the leader, Asadi Motahare of Iran. Interestingly, Jie Yi will play the Iranian in the seventh round and I hope she can take over the lead with a win. At this age level, we are not so far behind the rest of the world.
This is also proven in the Open U-8 where Lye Lik Zang has a good run with four wins, one draw and one loss. Lik Zang still has a chance for a good placing if he start winning more games. I was introduced to this boy by local coach Collin Madhavan who is very excited about him. I am sure he is a talent that we will hear more of, in the footsteps of Yeoh Li Tian.
Good luck to all our boys and girls in Slovenia!
