Malaysia draws Switzerland!

Round 7 of the World Youth U16 Olympiad is ended. Malaysia has pulled off a draw with the higher-rated Switzerland.

On board 2, Yeoh Li Tian lost badly after playing a Berlin Defence. It proved a wrong choice of opening as he seemed not to understand how to defend this opening. Li Tian now drops to third in the board standings.

Roshan leveled the score with a win when his higher-rated opponent over-estimated his position.

Elgin had a great chance to win. In a pawn ending , he had an extra protected passed pawn.  This is a standard win but he proceeded to bungle it with a careless move. His opponent seized the chance to go into a queen ending where Elgin still had an extra pawn. Queen endings are reall y difficult even with an extra pawn. Elgin decided not to push his luck in time trouble and a draw was agreed.

The final game between JianWen was drawn so our boys have a 2-2 draw.

Elgin Lee - B. Hasenohr

1. h4?

A very simple win could be 1. g3 g6 2. h3 and black is in zugzwang. 2....Kc5 3. e6 Kd6 4. Kxc4 Kxe6 5. 5. Kc5 Kd7 6. g4 hxg4. 7. hxg4  Kc7 8. f5 Kd7 9. g5 and white wins easily.

1...g6 2. Kb4??

White can still win with 2. g3! Kc5 3. e6 Kd6 4. Kxc4 Kxe6 5. 5. Kc5 Kd7 6. Kd5 Kc7 7. Ke5 Kb6 and now 8. Kf6 Kxb5 9. Kxg6 a5 10. f5 a4 11. f6 a3 12. f7 a2 13. f8=Q a1=Q  14. Qf5+ followed by Kxh5 with an easy queen ending win.

However there is an even clearer win. 8. f5!! gxf5 9. Kxf5 Kxb5 10. g4 hxg4 11. Kxg4 a5 12. h5 a4 13. h6 a3 14. h7 a2 15. h8=Q controlling the black queening square.

2....Kd4! 3. e6 c3 4. e7 c2 5. e8=Q b1=Q 6. Qe5+ Kd3 7. Qd5+ Ke2 8. Qf3+ 1/2-1/2

So a win would have given Malaysia the match win over Switzerland! Nevertheless a very good result against a higher rated team and congratulations to our boys.

Malaysia meets  Georgia, another strong team, in round 8. But the way our boys are performing they may pull off another upset. Round 8 will start in about an hour. All the best and keep fighting!
