IM Jimmy Liew - FM Nicholas Chan, Merdeka Team

IM Jimmy Liew - FM Nicholas Chan
Merdeka Team, Round 7

1. d4 c5 2. d5 e6 3. c4 exd5 4. cxd5 d6 5. Nc3 Ne7 6. h4 a6 7. a4 Ng6 8. h5 Ne5
9. f4 Ng4 10. e4 Be7 11. Nf3 Bf6 12. h6

Black cannot take with 12...Nxh6 because 13. e5 will be very strong. If 12...gxh6 , white will regain the weak h-pawn and control the open h-file. Besides the black knight on g4 will have no retreat squares.

g6 13. Be2 O-O 14. e5 !?

Probably not a good move. I considered 14. Ng5 Bxg5 15. fxg5 Ne5 16. O-O f6 17. gxf6 Rxf6 18. Bf4 Nbd7 with a strong position for white. But I did not like giving that knight a strong square on e5.

14... dxe5 15.Ng5 exf4 16. Nge4 Bh4+

Suddenly I saw that 16... Ne3 was very strong 17. Bxe3 fxe3 18. Nxf6+ Qxf6 19. Bf3 Bf5 .However Nicholas never played Ne3 until it was already too late for him.

17. Kf1 f5

17... Ne3+ 18. Bxe3 fxe3 is almost lost for white as the black squares are very weak

18. Nxc5 Qe7??

I was very worried about 18...Qb6 19. Rxh4 (forced as 19. Qd4 Bf6 20. Qc4 Nd7 21. Nd3 Nde5 22. Qxf4 Nxd3 23. Bxd3 Bd7 is lost for white as he cannot develop his queen-side as the pawn on b2 needs defending. Black just continues to bring his rooks into the game and it will be over.

18... Qe7 19. d6 Qe5
19...Qe5

20. Nd3 ?

I messed up my move order, Qb3+ first, now Kh8 (20... Rf7 21. Nd3 Qf6 22. Nd5 Qd8 23. Nb6} Ra7 24. Bxg4 fxg4 25. Ne5 wins big material.) 21. Nd3 Qf6 22. Bxg4 fxg4 23. Ne4 Qd8 24. Rxh4 Qxh4 25. Qc3+ , Black have to give up a whole rook to avoid mate.

20... Qxd6

Black gives up a piece to avoid mate. 20... Qf6 21. Nxf4 (21. Nd5 Qxd6 attacking the undefended knight on d5) and the unfortunate bishop on h4 limits black's defensive opportunities.) 21...Qd8 22.Qb3+ Kh8 23. Bxg4 fxg4 24. Rxh4 Qxh6 25. Ncd5 Qxh6 (to prevent mate after 26.Qc3+) 26. Bd2 g5 27. Bc3+ Kg8 28. Ne7 mate.

21. Rxh4 Ne3+ 22. Bxe3 fxe3 23. Qb3+ Kh8 24. Nd5

Threatening 25. Qc3+

Nd7 25. Qc3+ Nf6 26. Nxf6 Qxf6

26... Rxf6 27. Nf4 Bd7 28. Nd5 Raf8 29. Nxf6 Rxf6 30. Rd1 followed by Rxd7 winning material

27. Qxf6+ Rxf6 28. Bf3 g5 29. Rd4 Be6 30. Rd6 Raf8 31. Rc1 Rxh6

I set a trap. if 31...Bc4 32. Rxf6 Bxd3+ 33. Ke1 Rxf6 34. Rc8+ Rf8 35.Rxf8#

32. Ke2 g4 33. Bd5 Rff6 34. Rxe6 Rxe6 35. Bxe6 Rxe6 36. Rf1 Rc6 37. Kxe3 Rc2 38. Rf2 Rc4 39. Rxf5 Rxa4 40. Rf4 Ra1 41. Rxg4 h6 1-0

Good game Jimmy. I didn't expect a 'not so young' IM will play complicated game like this and win again young and strong player like Nicholas.

Abandoning castling and just looks at your 'ugly' king at f1!

I hope you will shine at this coming SEA Games.

Age does not matter!
